wedding planner, plan weddingWelcome to the free wedding planner timeline from the Right Hook band. But what is a band doing trying to tell me how to plan a wedding?

Well we have a unique insight because we have performed at hundreds of weddings. We liaise closely with the venues and the wedding planners. We sit down eat and chat with the photographers. We work with the caterers. And of course we work very closely with the couple getting married. And because we can provide music for the ceremony, drinks reception and evening party, we get to see many aspects of the day.

Therefore we have amassed a wealth of knowledge on every aspect of the wedding day. We know what works, what doesn’t work, what the bride loved, what the bride regretted, what the guests loved and how to get the best from each service provider by making their lives easiest.

Heck we should really start a wedding planning company ourselves. But we won’t because we love providing the entertainment and that’s what we’re best at.

But we thought we should at least share all this info with you guys because we know what it takes to arrange a perfect wedding.

So here it is

Below we’re giving you access to our wedding planner timeline. This shows you what you need to plan and in what order. But then we’ll also trickle info to you when relevant to plan each aspect from the timeline in detail.

Top tips for the best wedding entertainment

Here are our ideas for the best wedding entertainment

Do you want the best wedding entertainment of 2018? Are you looking for some inspiration? Look no further and read our top tips and ideas for alternative wedding entertainment ideas.

Choosing the perfect wedding entertainment for your big day can be a big task. Catering for everyone’s diverse tastes in music and ensuring that everyone is happy can be daunting. A lot of people worry that if they have classical music or a jazz band it won’t be as current and up to date as a DJ who will be blasting out all the latest hits. However why stick to the same old boring clichés when there are so many alternative entertainment options available that will make your wedding the most talked about event of the year!wedding entertainment, wedding bands, best wedding band

Covers Band with a twist

One of the best things about having a live band is that the personalities and vibrancy of each band member comes out in their performance. A good band will encourage the guests to join in and get on the dance floor. Their  infectious vibrant energy will be felt by everyone in the room.

However whilst the traditional covers band is still great for wedding entertainment, if you want to add a little exotic twist to your day why not look into a samba or salsa band? The vibrant carnival music will surely get the most reserved guests shaking their hips!

Be your own DJ

A lot of people decide to have a DJ as it’s cheaper than a band and then they have the reassurance that there will be music for all ages. But if you are still hoping to have a band but would like a DJ as well. You can ask your band if they also have a DJ option. A lot of professional wedding bands will have that service so that they play music in the breaks and after the band have finished playing. We at the Right Hook provide this service as standard. But failing that why not mix your own wedding songs? If you have an iPod or iPad you can decide which songs you would to be played and ask a close friend or family member to be in charge of this and click play once the band have finished. Technology has come a long way in recent years and enables us to become our own DJ if we want to.

If you love Jazz

If you are a jazz lover and have always dreamed of having a jazz band at your wedding but you feel that it’s just not the right music for the whole day. Then why not have a jazz band for the early part of the reception for a short session when guests arrive after the ceremony. Perhaps playing on the lawn. Just imagine the sound of the saxophone drifting on the summer breeze whilst you sip on your champagne with your guests. Again you may find your wedding band of choice can cater for this extra perk for a smaller fee than hiring a full jazz band. A lot of musicians have connections or even play multiple instruments, its always best to ask. Once again, the Right Hook provide this option for a small fee because they are already on site for the evening performance.

How to keep the guests happy

In recent years we have seen more and more humorous and quirky wedding entertainment ideas that create happy and fun memories for everyowedding entertainment, wedding bands, best wedding bandne. Here are few ideas you could incorporate into your big day.

Casino Themed Night

Why not add some class and glamour to the reception and hire blackjack and roulette tables allowing guests to try their luck. Having some casino fun is an ideal way for guests to come together and break the ice at the tables. By the end of the evening everyone should be more familiar and ready to hit the dance floor.

Funny Photo Booth

The idea of a photo booth allows your guests to come together and make new friends and take some silly photos of one another. There are usually props and funny dressing up clothes, plus a professional photographer who will be snapping away ensuing you are all having a great time. Afterwards you will all have some hilarious memories to smile fondly at.

Singing Waiters

A waiter’s main job is to ensure that all the guests have full glasses and their food on time but why not add a few special waiters to bring some theatrical fun to your day. Look for catering by a company who offer singing waiters, they will provide guests with an unexpected but memorable moment when they burst into song.

Garden Gameswedding entertainment, wedding bands, best wedding band

This is a simple and great way to keep your guests entertained. But it is best planned for a summer wedding where you can be sure of some nice weather. Some venues already offer this option in their package. Such as giant Jenga ,Chess or Connect Four. But we find old classic garden gardens such as croquet or cricket are also a fab way to pass the time too. You can bring your own games to the venue if they at not already provided.

Try not to worry!! Your wedding is one of the biggest events in your life and you wouldn’t be normal if you didn’t feel stressed or anxious about the big day. But remember it’s is going to be amazing, so try to enjoy everything because you’ll regret if you don’t.

We hope these wedding planning tips have been useful and you feel closer to creating the best wedding you can envisage.

Money saving wedding tips

Here are our top money saving wedding tips

The wedding tips that will save you hundreds

With an average wedding costing around £25,000 we thought it would be useful to have some money saving wedding tips to help you enjoy an amazing wedding for less money – remember there are always ways to cut back! Before you begin planning make a list of all the things you need to do and prioritise them. This can really help with budgeting as well. Is that cold embossed paper more important than a plainer paper but inviting an extra person to the reception? wedding tips

This is one of the biggest costs for your wedding and you could say one of the most important (apart from the dress). For that reason you are more likely to splurge more money here. However you can still have that perfect venue for less by picking an unpopular day. Most people go for a weekend but if you pick a week day you will find some places will reduce the cost as much as half! The benefit of this is that you will also get good discounts for other things such as florists or photographers as they are less likely to have work then. Yes there is the worry that less people can make it but you know the people that really matter will make an effort and take a day off work to be there.

Guest List

Try not to over invite. It’s easily done but remember the bigger the guest list the bigger the cost. Seventy might sound a lot but that’s only fifteen members of each persons family, then ten friends each with their partners. You can see how the number can add up very quickly. So try and stick to family and few best friends for the main reception and invite the rest to the evening.

Wedding dresses

One of the biggest wedding tips where you can save hundreds is the wedding dress! So many woman may say “I want a brand new dress” but remember most wedding dresses are worn for a matter of hours and you could be saving a small fortune. With the average wedding dress selling for over a thousand pounds why wouldn’t you want to save some money and still have that dress you’ve always dreamed of for a fraction of the cost? These days you can pick up designer dresses and find the exact dress you may have seen in a bridal magazine. We would suggest looking on some sites online such as SellMyWeddingDress, Preloved and Confetti‘s for sale section. Other good bets are The Dressmarket, Gumtree and of course Ebay.  Another great place to search is Oxfam, they have eleven specialist bridal departments. Its says on their website that some designers often donate their dresses to the charity straight from the catwalk so you might even bag yourself a designer bargain.

Make upwedding tips

Whilst a lot of brides do their own make up, some opt to pay for beauty expert to come to their house. That’s great but it does cost a lot and if you aren’t sure its worth that to you then there are other ways you can look gorgeous without spending so much. Why not try a beauty counter in a department store such as House of Fraser or Debenhams? Or ask a friend who you trust and whose make up you have admired. You buy the make you like but perhaps get them to help you on the day.

Alternatively, check out beauty training schools. They may do your hair and make-up free on the day as part of their training course. Check Beautyfinder for a directory of training schools and colleges that are local to you.

Designing and making your own wedding invitations can be fun but also it makes them more personal to you. There are loads of great sites out there now which can help you do this such as Wedding chicks. You would still have to pay for the paper and ink but if you are really on a tight budget you could email them to your guests instead. Also instead of making save the date cards and posting them out, why not let people know by text or email. Alternatively create an event on Facebook (choose ‘private’ in the event’s privacy section, so only guests can see).

We hope these wedding planning tips have been useful.

If you haven’t booked a wedding band yet and you need one then check out the Right Hook. We have performed at hundreds if weddings and know exactly how to make sure everybody, from the oldest to the youngest has a great time. How to pick your wedding photographer

Here are our top tips on how to pick your wedding photographer

Choosing your wedding photographer needs some serious planning. When planning your wedding you can directly view items such as your dress, sample the cake, and watch your chosen band in action. But when it comes to your wedding photos, you won’t see what you’re getting until after the event. And you don’t want to have to do it all again to get those special shots!

That means careful research and selectiveness regarding professional skills and artistic style are even more important when selecting your wedding photographer. We’ve put together a few handy tips to help you pick your wedding photographer and to make sure you have amazing photos that capture your day and create lasting memories for you both in years to come.

Pick a style

wedding photographer, wedding day, wedding, bride and groomBefore you start researching local photographers we suggest that you first discuss and decide what style of photography you prefer. These could be candid and spontaneous photos which are not posed. For example it might show the bridesmaids dancing whilst sipping on their champagne and a group of men laughing or joking around by the bar. These types of shots are unplanned so in most cases people will not be staring into the lense. You may feel these types of images are more of a realistic portrayal of your day than the more posed photos. The classic photos tend to be posed shots of the two of you, your friends and family in front of various backdrops. That’s not to say there isn’t room for creativity in this category. Depending on your venue you can have some truly beautiful backdrops so it might be an idea to show your photographer around your chosen venue first so they can get an idea of your requirements.

Research is the key

This is where many people fail. They meet one photographer that they like and just book them before reviewing all the options. But its better to look around first. Start your search by reading reviews from recent newlyweds and browsing local wedding suppliers. Then review potential photographer’s websites to check out photos of other weddings they’ve shot, which will give you an idea of their style and personality. Also check out their Facebook, Instagram and Twitter pages too if possible. That enables you to read other people’s reviews and check they are positive whilst also seeing how the photographer responds to any comments.

Arrange to meet them

Set up some meetings with your top 3 or 4 photographers that you have researched and make sure when you meet them you explain that you are seeing a few people before you decide to book. First of all check they are free on the date of your wedding and then go on to talk about your venue, wedding style and what you envision for your photos. Its always important to meet your chosen photographer before booking so you can see if you like their personality and view their wedding album portfolio.

Viewing their workwedding photographer, bride and groom, wedding

When reviewing a photographer’s album, look for the key aspects you would like captured. Such as whether they got photos of both the bride and the groom when they locked eyes for the first time? Also look for the thoughtful expressions and shots that show emotion from the day. Do people look relaxed and joyous, not like a deer caught in headlights! Also make sure the images have good lighting and beware of any photos that are poorly focused.

Make sure you get on

Don’t dismiss the fact that you need to like your photographer. Is the photographer excited by your thoughts and description of your wedding? Are they interested and positive when responding to your questions and are they making good suggestions? Any good professional photographer needs to have good social skills and be confident and bold enough to go out hunting for great images. Whilst doing so they need to be able to put you at ease and avoid irritating or pestering guests. Remember they will be shadowing your every move and the more comfortable you are with them the better.

Time to book

Once you have researched your photographers its time to make a decision and book one.  While packages vary, most include about 6 to 12 hours to cover everything from preceremony events (getting ready with your bridesmaids or first-look photos) to the end of the reception. It’s usually better to pay for more coverage if your preference is to have them until the end and there’s a chance you’ll run over (overtime is usually charged at a higher hourly rate). Make sure you go over all the pricing and pay the deposit by credit card incase of any problems nearer the day.

Ask about your rights

Most contracts have a clause that says that the photographer owns the rights to all photos taken at the wedding, even the ones of you. In other words, the wedding photographer can use them promotionally on their website or for ads, etc. That also means you can’t just post the digital proofs they send you—most photographers have a policy that you can only share watermarked images or images with their credit on them. Also, unless you negotiate otherwise, if you want to print the images yourselves or order an album from another source, you’ll have to buy the rights to the images.

We hope these  tips have been useful and wish you lots of luck in your search for finding your wedding photographer.

If you haven’t booked a wedding band yet and you need one then check out the Right Hook. We have performed at hundreds of weddings and know exactly how to make sure everybody, from the oldest to the youngest has a great time. We also love to work with you to make the event as personal and special as possible so contact us for more information on how we can do that.

Amazing first dance – How to choose yours

Tips to help you plan that uniquely amazing first dance

Everyone wants to have an amazing first dance right? Are you worried you will just spend your first dance swaying from side to side in an awkward romantic embrace? Then why not create a totally amazing and unique dance routine to surprise your wedding guests that will be remembered for years to come. A lot of people don’t do this as they think it’s too hard or that they don’t have time. But if you want to do this you can. Just a few hours a week practice and you will be John Travolta before you know it.

First dance lessons are fast becoming a must have with couples who are a little more adventurous but even if you aren’t as confident as you would like to be, there are still many options for you to do a dance that is simple and has your own stamp on it. Remember you don’t have to be flamboyant and jump around your stage to create something that is unique.Amazing First Dance, wedding, wedding ideas, first dance, wedding planning

With the popularity of Youtube and Instagram videos it does seem a lot of couples are trying to compete to gain that first dance crown but although you don’t want to necessarily copy someone you can look online to gain some inspiration for the kind of dance you and your partner would like to learn. It can be as easy or as complicated as you want it to be and it’s a great bonding experience that you will have memories of after the event.

We have put together a few ideas to help you get started:

Take inspiration from the classics

Copy a famous dance routine from a film such as Dirty Dancing’s “Time of my life”. You know that famous high jump is a winner and will get your guests cheering in delight and will leave you feeling like a film star.

Fun Mix up

Learn a medley of short dances from a few famous songs and put them all together for a dance off between you and your partner. Throw in some Jacko with some Britney, a bit of Elvis or James Brown, and perhaps a dose of Grease to get everyone singing along.  This is a fun and engaging dance for couples who are looking for a less serious first dance routine.

Get Elegant with Strictly

With the recent popularity of programmes like Strictly Come Dancing you may fancy something a little more elegant so why not try learning some ball room or salsa dancing; this will surely impress your guests. While some couples may be happy to muddle through a routine themselves or enlist a friend with dance experience for advice, if you’re determined to get the technique and footwork spot on, you can’t beat a series of lessons from a professional.

Surprise him with your talents

If you are musical yourself then perhaps instead of dancing you want to sing your first dance as a surprise to your partner, this is romantic gesture that will pull at everyone’s heart strings. You could even go one step further and write the song yourself. Not only will this be an incredibly beautiful gesture on your wedding day, but it is a song that the two of you will have for the rest of your lives. Perhaps once you have finished the song the band can then take over and sing it again whilst you embrace your partner for a twirl around the dance floor to your amazing first dance.

The bottom line is, everybody has a first dance and it’s about choosing a style and song you both like to create something you both enjoy. These are the memories you take away with you from your special day.

The Right Hook band are always very happy to make each event as personal and bespoke as possible and learning your chosen first dance song to perform on the big day is just one of the ways they do that. Get in touch now to see if they can perform the song you need or ask them for some ideas of popular first dance songs that have gone down well and to ensure you have an amazing first dance.

Here is an article that might help you choose that first dance.

Top 5 tips to finding your perfect wedding dress

How to find that perfect wedding dress

Shopping for your wedding dress is a once in a life time experience, something that you want to cherish the memories of for a long time. Therefore it certainly isn’t something you want to rush. With so many dress styles and options, the choices can sometimes make it overwhelming so here are a few helpful tips to ensure a relaxing and enjoyable shopping experience.

1. Start your search for your dress about 8 months to a year before the big day. Designer gowns should really be ordered six to nine months in advance to ensure there is enough time for delivery and any alterations. If you want to customize your dress by adding jewels or lace or by modifying the neckline or train, it can take even longer, so plan accordingly.

2. Come up with a realistic budget and factor in any alterations. Some bridal shops cap their alterations price at a certain amount but others will charge a flat fee. Remember that most salons will ask for 50% of the cost upfront. We would advise to pay by credit card so you have a record of the payment incase any problems arise. Always plan ahead so you know your realistic budget and can ensure you are looking only at gowns in this price range.  Brides are devastated when they find ‘The One’ but don’t have the available funds to purchase the dress, which risks their gown being discontinued or sold to someone dress

3. Before going shopping, familiarise yourself with the different styles of dresses by looking in magazines and perhaps starting a scrap book of your likes and dislike. But remember not to entirely disregard a style until you have tried it on. There are 6 main styles for wedding gowns which are:

  • Ball gown
  • Empire
  • A-line
  • Sheath
  • Fit-and-flare
  • Mermaid

Try on one of each the first time you go shopping for your gown so that you can decide which ones suit you the most and narrow down your search.

4. Limit the amount of people you decide to take on your shopping trip. Although it might be tempting to ask everyone on what will be the most important shopping trip of your life, the more people you invite, the greater the chance that you’ll end up confused. Bridal consultants advise selecting up to 3 close friends or relatives to accompany you to gown appointments, people who are honest and have your best interest at heart.

5.Test how comfortable your gown is by moving around in it, sit down, dance, and walk up and down the shop. Remember you will be wearing this dress all day and you want to feel amazing and beautiful. It should fit you perfectly and feel comfortable to wear. If you have to keep pulling up the cleavage or the dress is so tight you can’t breathe then ditch that style and move on to the next. Don’t worry or rush the process, you will know when you find the one; go with your gut instinct. Remember it’s your day and your dress!

We hope these wedding dress tips have been useful and wish you lots of luck in your search for your dream dress.

Top 5 tips on choosing your wedding theme

Why should you choose a wedding theme?

Why do you need a wedding theme? A wedding theme will tie together the personal elements of your wedding and create a mood for your loved ones that illustrates who you and your partner are. This could be dictated by something as simple as a colour you both love, a place, an era or perhaps just the venue’s own style.  Here are are some top tips to help you find the perfect wedding theme for your big day.

The Venue

Most likely your choice of venue is going to be a reflection of you and your partner so you may find that you can use the venue to help you with your theme. For example if you have opted for a beach wedding you may want to have shells, sand and pebble decorations. There are so many wonderful ideas that you can discover with some research.

wedding theme, wedding planning, wedding bandAbout you

It’s important to sit down together and discuss words and key aspects that define you as a couple. Perhaps places you have traveled together, exploring activities that you both enjoy, cultures you both love, colours and styles. These sorts of touches and personal thoughts can really help you create a individual theme that captures your life together.

If you haven’t used it before then now is an ideal time to try using Pinterest. It’s a great visual bookmarking tool that helps you discover and save creative ideas such as beautiful images, fashion styles, videos and tips. You can build up a catalogue of your interests and use them to help you decide on your theme.

Theme the band

So you have spent ages planning your big day and you’ve chosen that special shade of green for the bridesmaid dresses and ties for the men which then matches the beautiful bows on the reception hall chairs. Why not ask your evening entertainment to incorporate the colour into their look too? Just think how professional and streamlined your big day will be then. Not all wedding bands will offer this service but some will. We at the Right Hook do and we find that couple really appreciate that attention to detail.

Ask for help

Don’t be afraid to include friends in your decisions or have conversations with the decoratively gifted members of your family. After all you have a lot to plan and sometimes it can be overwhelming! For this reason it can be great to have advice and help from others who may give you fresh ideas you haven’t even thought of. Always be opened minded and you will have no end of creative inputs from people.
